The Catch by Taylor Stevens

Vanessa Michael Munroe, the informationist, chameleon, and hunter who has built her life on a reputation for getting things done—often dangerous and not-quite-legal things—returns in this new novel from the New York Times bestselling series by Taylor Stevens.

In the wake of going head-to-head with international sex traffickers inThe Doll, Munroe has retreated to Djibouti, where, while passing as a man, she finds work as an interpreter for a small, private, maritime security company. Pressed into duty at sea by her boss, Leo, Munroe discovers she is part of a gunrunning operation and she wants no part in protecting the crew or cargo. When the ship is attacked by pirates off the Somali coast, Munroe escapes and takes the unconscious captain with her to get answers. Leo's wife, Amber Marie, the only person Munroe has cared about since she arrived in Africa, is desperate when Leo goes missing along with the rest of the hijacked crew, so Munroe agrees to try to find him for Amber Marie's sake. She soon realizes it's not the cargo or the ship or the crew that the hijackers were after: they want the captain. On the run, wounded, without connections or resources, and with the life of the captain as bait and bartering chip, Munroe believes that the only way to save Leo, assuming he's still alive, is to hijack the ship back.

Favorite Quote - What did it profit to gain the world and lose your soul?

That quote pretty much sums up Vanessa Michael Munroe to me. She constantly feels like she is losing herself and trying not to. The Doll was my first experience with Munroe and I love that she is a kick-ass heroin who is in love but runs from it because of all the violence in her life. Munroe is in Africa taking time away from her life is the only way to describe it and she passes for a boy. Which works to her advantage especially in a country like Africa. She is forced to go on a job she doesn't want to and the job ends up being even more. There is action in this book, but after Munroe gets badly injured you see how much can be done by being very smart and playing all the players against each other. Her natural ability to learn new languages in days is very helpful in playing to win. Sounds like a game but its not really although a few times chess references are made in making a point on her figuring out who is who and how to work on keeping herself alive. I am looking forward to the next book as I look forward to seeing Munroe and Bradford again.

About the author

TAYLOR STEVENS is the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of the critically acclaimed Vanessa Michael Munroe series. Published in over twenty languages and optioned for film by James Cameron's production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, the books are international boots-on-the-ground thrillers featuring a mercenary information hunter in a non-testosterone mix of Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher.

Stevens came to writing fiction late. Born into an apocalyptic cult, separated from her family at age twelve and denied an education beyond sixth grade, she lived on three continents and in a dozen countries before she turned fourteen. In place of schooling, the majority of her adolescence was spent begging on city streets at the behest of cult leaders, or as a worker bee child caring for the many younger commune children, washing laundry, and cooking meals for hundreds at a time. In her twenties, Stevens broke free in order to follow hope and a vague idea of what possibilities lay beyond.

In addition to writing novels, Stevens shares extensively about the mechanics of storytelling, writing, overcoming adversity, and the details of her journey into publishing at http://www.taylorstevensbooks.com/con... - she welcomes you to join her.
