Description:

It’s never too late for a second chance at love.

Keiran McDermott has lived by one simple rule for over a hundred years: keep a safe distance from humans at all times. He knows from experience that close proximity to them can lead to disasters and more often than not, end up badly. But when the need to explore a nearby town places him directly in the path of a woman being stalked by two foul predators, the instinct to protect the young beauty from the men intent on causing her harm forces him to break his self-imposed law.

However, once she’s safely away from her attackers, Keiran finds himself locked in another battle. He knows his weakness can kill: it did so in the past. But how can he find the courage to stay away, when the image of her lovely face torments his mind?

When a new threat forces him to come to Celine’s aid again, will Keiran be able to fight temptation long enough to keep her alive and protected, even from himself?

Excerpt:

Deciding he had seen enough and that it was time to take action, Keiran dropped from the branch on which he stood, landing three feet away from the two assailants without making a sound. Even as he straightened his lean body and stood facing their backs, they remained unaware of his presence.

When the taller of the two men bent forward and grabbed a fistful of the woman’s now-soiled uniform, Keiran gripped his collar and jerked him backwards. Scared, the man glanced over his shoulder to see a pale-skinned man with a pair of glowing green-colored eyes staring back at him. He was so stunned he could not react. Keiran understood what the man saw when he looked at him. He saw the profile of a potentially vicious killer. The truth of his nature surely revealed itself in his unnaturally colored eyes. Even in his inebriated state, the man could sense that something about Keiran was not right. Because of this, the attacker hesitated.

The shock of having his plans foiled by a stranger did not last long though. As soon as he recovered from the surprise of turning to find Keiran standing there, the man lurched forward, intending to beat his fists into Keiran’s face. Unfortunately for him, he was too slow for someone with supernatural abilities. Before his fist could connect, Keiran tossed him through the air and he landed twenty feet away, bumping his head hard against the ground and losing consciousness instantly.

The attack was over in a matter of seconds, so the second man had not even noticed Kieran’s presence there until the sound of his comrade’s scream sliced through the air and filled the silent void. Not fully understanding what had just happened, but aware something bad had occurred to his accomplice, he immediately turned and allowed for his gaze to scan the area around him. He saw movement behind the trees but, try as he might, he could not see what or who was moving out there. All he could see was a fuzzy blur that kept darting from one tree to another. The fact that he was now standing alone in the middle of the woods with an unconscious victim and an awkwardly sprawled accomplice a few feet away sobered him quickly. Something was not right, and he had no way of comprehending what.

Realizing he had no weapon to use, he opted for following the woman’s example of using a branch as a self-defense mechanism. This only served to amuse Keiran, who stood perfectly still not too far from where the man was. It did not take long for the man to begin to sweat as he threatened from afar to decapitate the bastard toying with him. Considering the only weapon the man had was a simple tree limb, Keiran could not help but wonder how his opponent planned to accomplish this.

Keiran smiled. The man was a coward, showing only false bravado when dealing with helpless females. Now that someone with power confronted him, he showed his true colors. Turning from side to side, the man frantically swayed his weapon of choice back and forth as Keiran passed by him at speeds undetectable by humans. There was no way a simple wooden pole would protect him, but Keiran sure found it fun seeing the man break a sweat. Keiran could have knocked him out by now, but that would not have been as amusing. Besides, it was better if this lowlife learned a lesson before he got some literal sense knocked into him.

The stench of fear filled the air as the man slashed through nothing but air after Keiran moved in and lightly tugged on the man’s jacket, backing off before the man could even turn to see him. After a few more playful tugs, which caused the man to scream like a frightened ninny, Keiran finally stepped forward to finish what he’d started. Before the worthless excuse for a man could grasp what was happening, Keiran gripped his jacket and hurled him against a nearby tree. The impact snapped the man’s spine in three places, paralyzing him instantly.

With the same stealth as that of a cougar, Keiran rapidly approached the man, kneeled next to him and revealed a set of pearly white fangs. “If you ever come after an innocent woman again I will tear you to pieces,” he growled, just seconds before the man lost consciousness.
